Musical Is Top Of Dukes Pops

2nd January 2018

It may have infamously failed to win Best Picture at the Oscars but La La Land came top of the most popular films screened at The Dukes in 2017.

The Lancaster cinema has just revealed its top ten films of last year and La La Land is the first musical to find a place, let alone the top spot, for quite some time.

The film which beat La La Land to the Oscar – Moonlight – crept into The Dukes chart in tenth place.

In complete contrast to La La Land’s postmodern homage to Hollywood musicals, Dunkirk was the second most popular film to be screened at The Dukes in 2017.

It was closely followed by Victoria & Abdul in third place proving Judi Dench is still a popular draw for Dukes audiences. It is the fifth time in six years that a film in which she appears has made the cinema’s top ten and in 2017, she also starred in Murder on the Orient Express which came in at number 9.

Other films appearing in The Dukes top ten highest grossing films of 2017 were: Manchester by the Sea, Lion, Jackie, The Death of Stalin and My Cousin Rachel.

As well as seeing thousands of people through its doors, The Dukes cinema had another reason to celebrate in 2017 when it won the Northern Soul Award for Cinema of the Year with the judges describing it as ‘a truly community focused experience.’

The Dukes cinema shows films daily as well as many Stage on Screen events. Its Movie Mornings, which include a free tea or coffee and pastry, are particularly popular. Parent & Baby screenings take place regularly too as do films for people with dementia as part of The Dukes A Life More Ordinary programme.
