The Leeds and Liverpool Canal was the first of the Trans-Pennine canals to be started and the last to be completed. The length and the complexity of the route meant that the canal took 46 years to build at a cost of five times the original budget.
Lancaster Lune Aqueduct was designed by John Rennie and carries the 20 foot wide canal over the Lune. The aqueduct was restored in 2011-2012, and can now be enjoyed on foot or by canal boat.
Built to carry trade between Kendal and Preston, Lancaster Canal is now a haven for wildlife. The towpath stretches over 27 miles and is ideal for peaceful countryside walks.
Rivington Pike is one of the north of England's best viewpoints. The historic tower is reputed to date as far back as far as 1138 and boasts breath-taking views of Rivington and beyond.
