If you are finding climbing for the first time and wondering how to get started or just want to give it a try, there is everything you need to start your own climbing story. Instructors, safety gear for hire and plenty of easier climbing routes will allow you to get to grips with all the new skills you’ll be learning as you navigate your way to the top of the climbing walls. For those starting out here’s a summary of the different types of climbing on offer.
Bouldering
Bouldering is rock climbing stripped down to its raw essentials. There’s no ropes or harnesses just foam matting to cushion any falls, all you need are climbing shoes and yourself. Your challenge is to climb short but interesting bouldering ‘problems’ (sequences of moves) using technique, balance, strength, and your brain. Using foam matting to aid falls. The great thing about bouldering is that over 18s can watch a short video and go bouldering without needing an instructed session.
Roped climbing
Top roping is the most common style used at indoor climbing walls. It is a style of climbing when you climb on rope that has an anchor already set up. There is a rope that runs from belayer up the wall to an anchor and back down to the climber. The belayer pays attention all the time so if a climber falls, he or she falls only a short distance. Please note that juniors and those new to climbing will need to book an instructed session to learn the ropes. Top roping is usually considered less physically demanding than other types of climbing due to the belayer’s ability to prevent the climber from taking large falls.
Lead climbing
Lead climbing is a more advanced climbing style that relies on fixed bolts for protection along a predefined route, with the potential to take short falls.
Why climbing? There are many benefits to climbing:
Provides a full body workout
Builds lean muscle and core strength
Improves physical fitness and flexibility
Improves cardiovascular health
Improves muscle tone and strength
Focusses the mind and improves concentration for better mental health, building confidence, self-esteem and social skills
A great alternative to the gym for wright loss. 60 minutes can burn up 600 calories.
Suitable for any age. There is no upper or lower age limit.
It’s fun
