Whalley

Whalley is a well-known Ribble Valley village set along the banks of the River Calder. Its position close to places like Downham places it firmly within one of Lancashire’s most recognisable landscapes, often associated with the stories of the Lancashire Witches. The village itself has a distinct character, with a mix of historic buildings, independent shops, cafés and restaurants lining its streets.

At the centre of Whalley’s history is Whalley Abbey, a 14th-century Cistercian site that still forms a key part of the village today. Visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins and grounds, or learn more about its past in the visitor centre, with features such as the weir on the River Calder offering a reminder of how the abbey once functioned.
