About Carnforth Heritage Visitor Centre

Carnforth Heritage Visitor Centre is the famous setting for David Lean’s iconic 1945 film “Brief Encounter”. This once significant railway station is situated at the junction on the West Coast Main line with the lines to Barrow-in-Furness and to Skipton and Leeds. The main line platforms were removed in the 1970s, but the busy station still has trains to Manchester, Morecambe, Leeds, Barrow and to Carlisle via the beautiful Cumbrian coast.

The station has been lovingly restored and is now an award-winning Heritage Centre and unique conference venue. The Refreshment Rooms have been restored to resemble the set used in Brief Encounter and are open daily from 9am.

The Heritage Centre tells the story of the making of the film and the people involved, including the Life and Times of David Lean, the film’s Director. “Brief Encounter” is screened continuously in our beautiful ‘Kinema’.

The Carnforth Room tells the story of the Railway Station from its opening as a wayside halt in 1846, its expansion as it became a junction and the history and development of its buildings, some of which date back to the opening of the railway. The opening of the Lancaster Canal and the Carnforth Ironworks, as well as the expansion of the railways, allowed the once small village of Carnforth to grow into a bustling community and our colourful display boards tell the story of the rich social and industrial heritage of the area.

The railway heritage of the area is well represented throughout the Heritage Centre and particularly in “The Steam Room”, which is packed full of memorabilia and photographs of the glory days of the railways.

The well-stocked Gift Shop has souvenirs and gifts for all ages, as well as hundreds of pre-loved railway books at reasonable prices.

Special events are held on selected weekends including model railway exhibitions, film evenings and guest lectures and for futher details see the website.

The Furness & Midland Hall is available for hire as a venue for conferences, meetings, social events, and private functions.  Please contact the venue for details.
