5 places to detour off the M6 into Lancashire
With more people taking to the roads for a family roadtrip this summer, we're giving you the best spots to go to if you need to take a break off the M6 motorway
Morecambe is a classic coastal town with wide views across Morecambe Bay and a long-standing connection to seaside traditions. Its promenade is one of the highlights, stretching along the waterfront with public art, including the well-known statue of Eric Morecambe, and open outlooks towards the Lakeland fells. The town centre offers a mix of independent shops, cafés and familiar favourites, while venues like the Midland Hotel—an iconic Art Deco building—add to the seafront’s character.
Along the coast, you’ll find plenty of space for walking, cycling and spending time by the water, with routes linking Morecambe to nearby Heysham and its historic village and harbour. The area also hosts a growing programme of events, from festivals and live music to seasonal activities along the promenade.
