About Carnforth Bookshop
Carnforth Bookshop is an independent, family run bookshop at the heart of the historic town of Carnforth, Lancashire. Proud to be part of the local community and support local jobs. The town is best known for its history with the railways and ironworks, and was famously used as a filming location for David Lean's Brief Encounter, with the famous clock and refreshment room still an attraction today.
The bookshop was established in 1977 and is situated across three floors and many rooms, although there was a much earlier bookshop on the site during the Victorian period. Nowadays we stock a wide variety of products, including New, Second Hand and Antiquarian Books, as well as a large selection of maps. The New Books Department is situated on the ground floor. Stocking the latest bestsellers, as well as many other titles and subjects, including a huge selection of local interest, books and Cicerone Walking Guides.
The shop also stocks an exciting selection of food and drink, cookery, popular science, travel and history books, as well as study guides, puzzle books and unique titles. There is a stock of OS, A-Z and Michelin maps.
Carnforth Bookshop offer a fast and reliable book ordering service and books can be shipped nationally and internationally. They can be ordered in store, by telephone, e-mail or social media. The Second Hand Books Department is located on the upper two floors, covering 16 rooms and containing over 100,000 books.
The rooms cater for a wide selection of interests from local Interest and old maps, to railways, transport, children's books, art, architecture, biography and history as well as many more subjects.
Catalogued books are available for some of the rarer books. On the first floor you will also find a cafe area with a comfortable sofa, tables and a self service coffee machine, the perfect place to take a break and have a look at books. The shop also sells a large selection of cards, gifts, children's toys, stationery, art materials and seasonal ranges in stock from Valentine's Day and Easter, to Halloween and Christmas.
