Celebrate the love of reading at Lancashire's Independent bookshops
Welcome to the National Year of Reading! Lancashire has everything you need to celebrate right on its doorstep.
Kirkham is one of the Fylde’s oldest settlements, with a history that stretches back to pre-Roman times. Its name reflects those early origins, combining Danish and Saxon influences, and it even appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Over the years, the town grew into a centre of industry, once home to a number of mills, with Progress Mill marking the final chapter of that period in the early 20th century.
Today, Kirkham sits at the heart of rural Fylde, with a strong sense of community and a range of local amenities. Independent shops, a traditional market and everyday essentials can all be found here, alongside places to eat and drink, including local favourites like Book Bean & Ice Cream, known for its regular author events. With its railway connection at Kirkham and Wesham and easy access to surrounding countryside, Kirkham provides a convenient base as well as a place with its own story to tell.
