Top tips to enjoy the biggest night of Blackpool's year

Blackpool is counting down to its biggest night of the year as the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On returns on Friday 4 September.

Thousands of visitors are set to gather on the Promenade for a star-studded evening of live entertainment before BBC Radio 2 presenter Paddy McGuinness officially switches on the 2026 Blackpool Illuminations shortly after 9pm.

Hosted by Graham Liver and Sharon Hartley from BBC Radio Lancashire, this year's Switch-On concert will feature performances from singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan, acclaimed rock band The Feeling and a headline set from iconic British pop group Five.

A total of 20,000 tickets were allocated through a public ballot, with the event once again proving one of the most sought-after dates in Blackpool's calendar.

While many seaside resorts wind down at the end of summer, Blackpool bursts into light with six miles of spectacular displays, innovative light installations, projections and interactive features. For 148 years, the Illuminations have transformed the resort each autumn, attracting millions of visitors from across the UK and around the world.

Kate Shane MBE, Managing Director of Blackpool Tourism Limited, said: "Switch-On is the biggest and busiest night of the year in Blackpool, attracting thousands of visitors to the resort for an unforgettable evening of entertainment and celebration.

"A huge team of dedicated partners, including Lancashire Constabulary, Beach Patrol, event security teams and many others, will be working throughout the evening to help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

“We want visitors to relax, enjoy the celebrations and make the most of what promises to be another fantastic night and an outstanding Illuminations season."

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy will also be in attendance at the event, having met with young people working at Blackpool Tower earlier in the day to discuss opportunities in the hospitality sector.
