New visitor centre and education hub planned for Wyre Estuary Country Park

Wyre Council, in partnership with Our Future Coast, is investing in the future of Wyre Estuary Country Park through the construction of a new visitor centre and education hub that will inspire learning, support conservation and enhance visitor experiences for years to come.

The project will see part of the existing Riverside Room demolished and replaced with a modern, purpose-built facility that will serve as a welcoming gateway to the park and its unique natural environment.

A £220,000 capital investment from Wyre Council will fund the construction of the new building, creating an engaging space where visitors can learn more about the park, the River Wyre and the rich wildlife that makes the estuary such a special place.

The new centre will also provide an upgraded base for Wyre Council's countryside rangers and dedicated volunteers, while two new outdoor classrooms will support hands-on learning experiences for schools and community groups visiting the park.

The development is being further enhanced through a £140,000 investment from Our Future Coast, which will create a dedicated saltmarsh information and education hub, complete with indoor and outdoor saltmarsh study areas for practical research. The facility will support the project's ongoing work to protect, restore and enhance natural flood defences, including saltmarsh habitats that play a vital role in helping communities adapt to rising sea levels.

A shared indoor learning space will also function as a citizen science laboratory, enabling Wyre Council, Our Future Coast and partner environmental organisations to host workshops, educational activities and group visits. The space will help people of all ages gain a deeper understanding of the estuary's environmental importance and the role they can play in protecting it.

Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces at Wyre Council, said:

"This exciting investment demonstrates our commitment to protecting and celebrating one of Wyre's most important natural assets. The new visitor centre will provide fantastic opportunities for residents, schools and visitors to connect with the natural environment, while supporting the excellent work of our countryside team and volunteers. Working alongside Our Future Coast, we're creating a space that will inspire future generations to learn about conservation, climate resilience and the unique wildlife of the Wyre Estuary. This project is another example of how we're delivering more to be proud of in Wyre and creating facilities that benefit the whole community."

Preparatory work has already begun on site, with the café-side car park expected to close on Wednesday 28 August to allow for the delivery of temporary accommodation during the construction period.

Construction is scheduled to begin in September, with the new facility expected to be completed in Spring 2027.

Wyre Council's programme of outdoor events will continue throughout the build, and visitors will still be able to access all park facilities, including the hire of all-terrain mobility vehicles.
