Miss Saigon delivers an unforgettable night of theatre in Lancashire
Some theatre productions entertain; others completely immerse you. Miss Saigon at Winter Gardens Blackpool firmly belongs in the latter category.
From the moment the orchestra begins to play, you’re transported into an emotionally gripping story. This isn’t simply a musical you watch, it is one you feel. Every scene draws you deeper into the lives of its characters, creating an experience that stays with you long after the final curtain falls and well into your journey home.
The touring production is nothing short of sensational. Every aspect of the show feels world-class, from the incredible staging, breathtaking projections and seamless scene changes to the spectacular production values that have made Miss Saigon one of the most iconic musicals ever created. The iconic helicopter sequence does not disappoint, remaining one of musical theatre’s defining moments and is every bit as jaw-dropping as audiences hope it will be.
The cast deliver powerhouse performances throughout, but special recognition must go to Julianne Pundan in the role of Kim. Making her professional debut in this touring production, she delivers a performance that is nothing short of extraordinary. Her vocals are breathtaking, her acting utterly convincing, and she brings a remarkable balance of strength, vulnerability and resilience to one of musical theatre’s most demanding roles. It's almost impossible to believe this is a professional debut, given the confidence, maturity and emotional depth she brings to the role.
Her connection with the young actor portraying Tam is equally captivating. At just five years old, his performance is remarkable, bringing warmth, innocence and authenticity to every scene. Together, they create a deeply believable mother-and-son relationship that forms the emotional heart of the show. Their bond feels completely genuine, making many of the show’s most poignant moments all the more powerful and leaving more than a few audience members reaching for the tissues.
While Miss Saigon is driven by a deeply emotional story, the production is expertly balanced by the vibrant and charismatic presence of The Engineer. Brought to life with impeccable comic timing and boundless energy, the character delivers many of the show's lighter moments and provides a welcome contrast to the drama unfolding around him. Nowhere is this more evident than in the spectacular The American Dream number, a dazzling explosion of colour, choreography and ambition. Euphoric, entertaining and wonderfully over-the-top, it is one of the evening's standout moments and brings the audience to life with its sheer theatrical brilliance
The musical score is magnificent, providing the perfect soundtrack to this unforgettable evening. A special mention must also go to the live orchestra beneath the stage. Watching the conductor’s passion and the musicians’ enthusiasm peak above the pit added another layer to the evening, reminding us of the incredible artistry that brings live theatre to life.
Productions of this calibre demonstrate exactly why the Winter Gardens continues to be one of the North West’s premier theatre venues and a cultural cornerstone for Lancashire. The fact that audiences can experience touring shows of this international standard right here in Lancashire is something to celebrate.
