Hyndburn's annual Heritage Open Days take centre stage with packed programme of free events

Residents and visitors are being invited to discover the fascinating stories, landmarks and people that have shaped Hyndburn as Heritage Open Days returns this September.

Taking place from Friday 11th to Sunday 20th September, Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, with thousands of volunteers and organisations coming together each year to celebrate the nation’s heritage.

This year, Hyndburn will play its part with a fantastic programme of free events and experiences across seven locations: Accrington Stanley, Accrington Town Hall, Raza Jamia Masjid, St James’ Church, Stanhill Village, Accrington Library and Haworth Art Gallery.

From stepping inside some of the borough’s most historic buildings to exploring its industrial and sporting heritage, every event offers an opportunity to discover something new about Hyndburn, completely free of charge.

The programme gets underway at Accrington Library, where a special exhibition will run from Friday 11th to Saturday 19th September. Open between 9am and 5pm, with extended opening until 7pm on Wednesday 16th September, the exhibition will explore the lives of ordinary people who lived and worked in Accrington and the immediate surrounding area.

On Monday 14th September, Mayor of Hyndburn, Cllr Noordad Aziz, will welcome visitors to Accrington Town Hall for two special tours at 10am and 11:30am. Beginning inside the Mayor’s Parlour, visitors will be guided through the historic Town Hall, including the ballroom and the bust of Sir Robert Peel, before concluding in the council chamber. There is no need to pre-book and visitors can simply turn up on the day.

The festival will conclude on Sunday 20th September with a journey back in time at Haworth Art Gallery.
