Eden Project Morecambe marks eclipse with preview of one of the spectacular visitor experiences

As millions of people across the UK prepare to look skywards on Wednesday [12 August] for the most dramatic solar eclipse visible from Britain in nearly three decades, Eden Project Morecambe has released a new CGI image revealing more about one of the most spectacular elements of the landmark new destination opening on Morecambe’s seafront in 2028.

The new image shows the Realm of the Moon, an atmospheric and theatrical indoor world inspired by the tides, lunar cycles and extraordinary ecology of Morecambe Bay. At the heart of the Realm of the Moon will be the Tidal Theatre, a dynamic immersive space where shallow water will gently ebb and flow around visitors’ feet as the rhythms of the Bay are brought to life through media, performance, puppetry, lighting, sound and special effects.

The release of the image coincides with the solar eclipse this week, a rare alignment of the Sun, Moon and Earth. The celestial event provides a timely reminder of the planetary rhythms that shape life on Earth, from day and night to seasons, tides and the cycles on which countless species depend.

Within the Realm of the Moon, visitors will encounter the full moon spectacle linked to tidal rhythms in a dark immersive space where they can connect to the wonders of the natural world that lie below tidal waters in the nearby extraordinary Morecambe Bay.

The Realm of the Moon will be one of two major immersive experiences at Eden Project Morecambe. Alongside Realm of the Moon will be the bright, tropical Realm of the Sun, home to the Elder Tree, a striking 20-metre immersive exhibit celebrating the life-giving power of sunlight.

Inspired by the natural geometries, beauty and efficiency of seashells, the architecture of the Realms will be instantly recognisable and will be an emblem of sustainability with a deep connection to place, respecting and complementing the highly valued heritage landmarks nearby.

Together, the two realms will form the heart of Eden Project Morecambe’s visitor experience, exploring the overarching theme of Nature’s Rhythms: the patterns and systems that sustain life on Earth, the ways they are being disrupted by human activity, and what can be done to restore balance for people and planet.

Andy Jasper, Eden Project CEO overseeing the charity’s new destination in Morecambe, said: “The eclipse this week is a powerful reminder that we live in rhythm with the Sun and Moon, marking a powerful transition and renewal even if we do not always stop to notice it.

“The Realm of the Moon will take that idea and make it unforgettable. Visitors will feel the tide rise around them, see moonlight reflected in real water and experience the extraordinary life of Morecambe Bay through spectacle, performance and play.

“This new image gives a first glimpse of what we are creating: a magical, immersive theatre that is rooted in the ecology, culture and stories of the Bay, and designed to inspire people of all ages to see the natural world differently.”

Realm of the Moon has been made possible with support from the Garfield Weston Foundation, one of several major public and philanthropic donations helping to deliver Eden Project Morecambe, alongside support from the UK Government Investment Fund.

Construction is set to get under way later this month on Eden Project Morecambe’s Bring Me Sunshine Garden, a 1.5-acre, free-to-enter gateway community garden before work on the shell-inspired superstructures beings in winter 2026, marking a major milestone in the delivery of the transformational project.

The community garden will offer an early opportunity for local people and visitors to experience Eden Project Morecambe when it opens in spring 2027, before the wider destination opens in 2028.

Eden Project Morecambe is being delivered by the world-renowned educational charity Eden Project, working in partnership with Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster University. Once complete, the world-class destination will transform Morecambe’s central promenade into a vibrant, year-round attraction, delivering long-term social, environmental, cultural and economic benefits for Morecambe, Lancashire and the wider North West.
