Blackpool Zoo animals beat the heat!
As Britain endures one of its hottest Junes on record, the keepers at Blackpool Zoo have been finding creative ways to keep the animals comfortable with a range of cooling enrichment activities.
The sea lions are spending lots of time in their pool and enjoying sprats frozen into giant ice blocks while the lemurs enjoy some fruity ice lollies. Kawan the Bornean orangutan has been taking advantage of a refreshing sprinkler shower, the giant anteaters have been wallowing in a wet mud bath and the tapirs can be seen bobbing around in their own pool.
Keeper teams carefully monitor all species during periods of hot weather and adapt daily routines where necessary. Frozen treats, sprinklers, shaded areas and mud baths are all used to help animals remain comfortable during heatwaves.
