Thinking up things for children to do can be one of the biggest challenges for parents and grandparents. So why not use for inspiration and ideas.

Some of the best ideas are often the ones that don’t cost the earth such as spending the day on the beach (think sandcastles, ball games, picnics and paddling) or exploring a nature reserve or sculpture trails (think adventure playgrounds, activities for kids, wildlife to spot).

And if you think that all free kids activities have to be outdoors, and so at the whim of the weather, think again. The Harris Museum & Art Gallery in Preston is free and there’s usually a kids quiz to make the experience more interactive. Click here for more wet weather days out ideas.

If your kids are feeling creative then head down to Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery which is also free and regularly holds craft workshops so the whole family can get stuck in.
