A New Year musical tradition which began in Austria more than 85 years ago is celebrated in Morecambe this January.
The award-winning Promenade Concert Orchestra perform their own version of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Day Concert at The Platform on January 25.
Just like the world famous Austrian event, the concert features a lively programme of waltzes, marches and polkas, mainly by the Strauss family, with a Gems of Strauss medley celebrating Johann Strauss’s bi-centenary.
The concert opens with the popular overture, Invitation to the Waltz, by Weber, marking 200 years since his death in London.
Joining the Promenade Concert Orchestra to sing arias and songs from both operetta and shows will be award-winning soprano soloist, Sarah Fox.
Since leaving Giggleswick School, Sarah has had a glittering career where she has performed worldwide, working with leading orchestras and singing at prestigious venues including the Royal Opera House and at Glyndebourne.
Sarah has appeared at the BBC Proms and has been a regular guest on BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night. She has also sung with Rufus Wainwright and her recording career covers a wide repertoire.
Among the songs which Sarah will perform in Morecambe are Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man from Showboat, So In Love from Kiss Me Kate and Ivor Novello’s Waltz Of My Heart.
All the music chosen for the concert by orchestra founder and conductor, Howard Rogerson, is guaranteed to blow away those winter cobwebs and put a spring in your step.
Established in 2007, the Promenade Concert Orchestra, which is a registered charity, features semi-professional and excellent amateur musicians from the Lancaster, Morecambe and Kendal area. Now in its 19th season, future concerts include Music from the Palm Court on March 22 and Music from the Films on May 17.
