Borough parks receive Green Flag Award as two of the country’s best green spaces

  • Beacon County Park & Coronation Park receive the Green Flag Award for quality and care
  • Rangers and Clean and Green teams celebrated for their work
  • Parks vital in supporting community wellbeing

Beacon County Park in Up Holland and Coronation Park in Ormskirk are proudly celebrating their latest Green Flag Award wins having once again achieved the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

Thanks to the ongoing dedication from the Rangers, the Clean and Green Department and volunteers, the sites are two of 2,250 in the UK to achieve the award.

The news that the two West Lancashire parks have met the standards required for accreditation is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that cares for the green space and facilities so that visitors and residents can enjoy it year-round.

Beacon County Park, home of West Lancashire’s flagship countryside event, The Green Fayre, draws thousands each year with its craft demonstrations, Viking reenactments, dog agility shows and woodland workshops that celebrate rural heritage and sustainability.

Adding to its appeal is the dog-friendly Coppice Café situated next to the park’s playgrounds, offering quality food and drink in a relaxed natural setting.

Coronation Park, centrally located in Ormskirk town centre, provides a welcoming space for families, walkers and community events. Its accessible layout and tranquil atmosphere make it ideal for summer picnics, casual strolls and outdoor play.

Both parks also feature Changing Places toilets, offering enhanced facilities for people with complex disabilities.

Councillor Carl Coughlan, lead member for Leisure, said: “Receiving this award is a fantastic achievement but retaining the award truly reflects the outstanding commitment, dedication and passion that our Rangers and Clean and Green teams bring to their roles every day.

“We manage 16 park sites across the Borough, each offering unique spaces for recreation, relaxation and connection with nature from Beacon Country Park to Fairy Glen and Ruff Wood.

“Our parks are a much-loved part of our community and we're proud to see them recognised nationally for the quality experience it offers residents and visitors.”

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “Quality parks and green spaces like these parks make the country a heathier place to live and work in, and a stronger place in which to invest.

“Crucially, the two parks are a vital green space for communities in West Lancashire to enjoy nature and during the ongoing cost of living crisis it is a free and safe space for families to socialise.

"It also provides important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under license from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

With the sun shining and the green flags flying, now’s the perfect time to explore these celebrated parks. Whether it’s a picnic at Coronation Park or a woodland walk at Beacon Country Park, we hope residents can enjoy the best of West Lancashire’s green spaces this summer.
