It will be lights, camera, action for Morecambe's Promenade Concert Orchestra when they perform music from popular film blockbusters. The award-winning orchestra's latest outing at The Platform promises to be out of this world as it opens with music from 2001: A Space Odyssey which featured classical music on its soundtrack.
Another famous piece of classical music, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, which was heard during the American psychological epic war film, Apocalypse Now, will also be performed during the concert. War movies have often inspired some of the best known soundtracks and the May concert will feature music from Bridge over the River Kwai and The Dam Busters. Lightening the mood, Music From The Films will include popular tunes from Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and Beauty and the Beast too. The orchestra also plays homage to one of the highest grossing film franchises of all time, Harry Potter, with a performance of its symphonic suite.
The Promenade Concert Orchestra features professional, semi-professional and excellent amateur musicians from the Lancaster, Morecambe and Kendal area but often also welcomes guest soloists and Music From The Films is no exception. Tom Kimmance is a high achieving concert pianist and composer who will perform The Dream of Olwen theme from the 1947 British drama, While I Live, and Cornish Rhapsody from the British wartime film, Love Story, starring Margaret Lockwood as a concert pianist. He has also appeared in a film himself, playing a conductor in Midas Man. Also, featuring in the concert will be some music from the silent film era from the extensive collection of orchestra founder and conductor, Howard Rogerson.
