The Agents of Deterioration and Why Conservation Matters by Michael Bowes, Conservation Officer.
This talk will explore the critical role of conservation in safeguarding art collections for future generations. Using the framework of the Agents of Deterioration, which is a widely recognized concept in heritage preservation, the talk will look at the primary risks that threaten artworks and cultural objects over time. These agents include physical forces, fire, water, pests, pollutants, light, incorrect temperature, incorrect humidity, theft and vandalism, and dissociation.
With some real-world examples and practical insights, the talk will highlight how these factors impact the different materials that we find in cultural collections. Michael will also discuss the strategies and the importance of proactive, planned care in mitigating these risks, emphasizing that conservation is not just about repair but about long-term stewardship and preservation.
The talk will give an understanding of why conservation is essential, how environmental and human factors can interact to accelerate deterioration, and what measures cultural institutions take to protect their collections while maintaining public access to these historically important items.
