From treasure filled tombs, deciphering ancient texts and caches of mummies, the secrets of ancient Egypt have been revealed from the 19th Century onwards.
This short course will examine some of the most breathtaking discoveries. This includes George Reisner’s excavation of the burial shaft of Queen Hetepheres in 1925, found at Giza, the mother of Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid.
Also, Howard Carter’s discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, which made headlines worldwide in 1922, to date, a unique find. Followed by the lesser known, but somewhat comparable work at Tanis by Pierre Montet in 1939. Although overshadowed by the threat of war, the intact royal tombs yielded four gold masks, two silver coffins and jewellery to rival Tutankhamun. Finally, Flinders Petrie’s work at Hawara in 1888, brought us face to face with the ancient Egyptians, with his discovery of the so called Faiyum mummy portraits.

With 3 airports less than an hour away, Southport is easily accessible by air: Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the UK’s longest established operational airports, and is located 7 miles from Liverpool City Centre with major operators including KLM, Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is fully integrated into the North West’s Public transport system and located just ten minutes from the major motorway network making it easily accessible. Blackpool International Airport offers passengers a congestion-freealternative for air travel in and out of the Northwest. It is conveniently located at the end of the M55 which links up with the M6 and has public transport links nearby. Manchester International Airport is one of the UK’s most accessible international gateways operating to more than 200 destinations. You can connect to the airport via a number of options including train, coach and road links. Daily ferry crossings arrive into Liverpool from Belfast, Dublin and the Isle of man. There are also sailings from Dun Laogshire to Holyhead.
