At the end of WW2, two thousand Chinese merchant seamen where forcibly repatriated. The sailors crewed British ships bringing arms and food from America but were deported from Liverpool in 1946. Deportation orders were served by the Home Office on the Chinese seamen during a series of police swoops on the Liverpool dock area. Within 48 hours the sailors, many of whom had married English women, were on their way back to China.
Yvonne Foley is the daughter of a Chinese Seaman and an English Mother. She and her husband Charles have researched the story of the Chinese Seamen who were forced to leave the UK after WW2. It has been a journey that has taken them some twenty years. It still continues.
The talk will cover the story of the how and why the men were forced to leave.
