Alongside the Transatlantic Slave Trade, many Lancaster people were heavily involved in slavery through their trade in West-Indian goods and in some cases ownership of plantations.
Merchants became powerful and wealthy through trading in rum, sugar, wood and other goods produced by enslaved labour.
