Shirley May 'Not all of us came on the Windrush' Poetry Mixtape

An evening of poetry and discussion...
'Not all of us came on the Windrush' is a spoken word sharing and an exploration into the stories of Afro - Caribbean immigrants who came to the UK in the '50's; the people who they left behind and the new communities they built; places like Moss Side, Brixton and Toxteth.
The performance poetry sharing will close with The Mixtape Q&A hosted by Johnny Jay, debating page poetry vs performance poetry, questioning what is culture. Is your culture better than mine? The audience will be encouraged to participate and contribute, sharing their own stories and opinions.
The event is part of the Festival of Music and Culture https://www.facebook.com/festivalofmusicandculture/ .

Shirley May
Shirley May describes herself as 'a poet that performs' and is the Director of Young Identity. Her own work has been published in a number anthologies. She performs nationally and internationally, appearing at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe (New York), Calabash Writing Festival (Jamaica) The Schaubuhne (Berlin).
Her book 'She Wrote Her Own Eulogy', largely inspired by her family's history migrating to England, explores and navigates the untold contribution and stories from African and Caribbean immigrants to British society. 'She Wrote Her Own Eulogy' is a deeply emotional and often lyrical collection published by Wrecking Ball Press.
Signed copies of the 'She Wrote Her Own Eulogy' book will be available for purchase.

Mixtape
The Mixtape is a research and development project by Johnny Jay where he is using accessible digital content, music, social media platforms & his own DJ based remix arts technique to re-evaluate, rethink and rework how we access, engage and define arts and culture in the 21st century.
Culture is fundamental in defining and influencing the essence of who we are and how we think about ourselves as a society and our communication, thinking, identity and feelings are based on it.
The Mixtape involves JJ sampling and bringing elements together from different cultural traditions, practices and art forms, rearranging these elements to produce alternative stories and digital content from different alternative perspectives.
