Every day the moth trap is opened to see what moths we have caught as well as finding out all the weird and wonderful facts about moths.
Did you know that some moths only live for one day and never actually eat? And when you see a caterpillar it is far more likely to be a moth caterpillar rather than a butterfly caterpillar.
Moth traps allow the centre to record the species they get at Martin Mere, currently at 315 moths, as well as giving you an opportunity to get up close to these amazing creatures to take fantastic photos. To record the species, a light trap set up overnight is used. The moths are attracted to the light, go down the funnel, and hide amongst the egg boxes. Then in the morning, you can see what was caught and let the moths go.
There is no need to book for this event, simply head towards the Discovery Hide.
