Join an evening with The Gilchrist Collective and special guests as they celebrate Anne Gilchrist’s contribution to folk music through the songs she collected, in an entertaining evening combining archive footage, captivating story-telling and enchanting music with a fascinating perspective on local social history.
Born to Scottish parents in Manchester in 1863, she spent much of her long life dedicated to collecting and studying folk song, music and local traditions, a number of which came from her home county of Lancashire and especially from the Sunderland Point area. Independent, intelligent and articulate, she received an OBE in 1948 for services to folk music. Ten years earlier, in 1938, she was awarded the Gold Badge of the English Folk Dance & Song Society.
2023 marks the Diamond Jubilee of Anne Geddes Gilchrist’s OBE award and it is a fitting tribute that in this 75th year the Gilchrist Collective have brought her story and the songs she collected to the attention of folk song enthusiasts nationally.
