Join ebb & flo bookshop at Chorley Library for a sociable evening with travel writer and author Chris Moss for publication of his book, Lancashire, the Historic County That Made The Modern World. A wealth of fascinating information about our home county, the book traces the far-reaching impact of our cotton, coal and canals, trains, technology and television.
Chris will be in conversation and the author chat will be followed by a short fun quiz to see how much you know. There'll be refreshments for sale on the night (thanks to the Friends of Chorley Library).
About the book:
Cotton and capitalism, canals and railways, science and TV, sport and multiculturalism, Lancashire helped to shape the modern world. Liverpool was the nation's busiest port, Manchester its industrial powerhouse. Blackpool invented the working-class seaside resort. Preston boasts the nation's oldest motorway. From the mid-20th Century, Lancashire became a test ground for de-industrialisation, as towns built on coal, shipbuilding, textiles, glass, brewing, steel and manufacturing have had to reimagine themselves. In Lancashire, travel writer Chris Moss returns to his native county after a hiatus of almost four decades, travelling beyond caricatures and clichés to trace lines from the region's deep past through to its conflicted, contradictory present. Turning to the local history he was never taught at school, he visits familiar and unknown corners, seeking a sense of place as well as the elusive sensation of a homecoming.
