Festival Bowland 2020 - Meet the Artists

Perhaps you've always had a creative side, or maybe the past six months have awakened a spark? Whatever your motivation, join us for this chance to meet three artists who find much of their inspiration in the fells and fields, and whose work reflects the palette of our richly diverse countryside.

During this live, online event Heather Fox, Cultural Development Manager with Lancashire County Council, will chat with Bowland-based Nita Burrows and Keith Parkinson, and Cumbria-based Annie Luke Turner, to find out what motivates them, how they arrived at their current style and how you could be inspired to create your very own pieces.

Alongside video clips of the artists out in the landscape and in the studio we'll share details of where you can see each of their work. Annie Luke Turner – I am an abstract painter who makes paintings which are influenced by the landscape around me. I try to capture a feeling and atmosphere of being in that place which will include visual information, but also the smell, touch and feel of the place. I am fascinated by maps, the history of a place and the layers in a landscape which reflect its archaeology. These fascinations are reflected in the layers and marks in my paintings. Nita Burrows – I have always enjoyed creativity, but not always recognized its importance in my everyday life. Looking back, it’s always been there.

My spiritual home are the hills of the Pennine moors, it is here where I have lived most of my life. Feeling the weather on my skin and experiencing the place which surrounds me is where my inspiration comes from. Now I am experimenting by making marks in wood, mostly, but also metal plates and even milk cartons. Keith Parkinson – My work usually ranges from landscape painting to abstract work and stages in between. It is characterised by colour and light and dark. I like drama, which results in quick, energetic and expressive painting. I sometimes work with ideas linked with haiku poetry and might incorporate text. I do think it is important that my work has a sense of authenticity. By that I mean I need to have a real connection with the subject of my paintings. I need to know and love a place to be interested in painting it. This event will be hosted as a live Zoom session.
