Lancaster Arts is thrilled to offer a remarkable opportunity to hear Mahler's Tenth Symphony, arranged for piano.
Pianist, Chris White has transcribed Mahler's unfinished Tenth Symphony for piano and debuted his arrangement with the Gustav Mahler Society in London in 2010.
Mahler Symphony No.10 in F-sharp Major arr. White
i. Andante-Adagio
ii. Scherzo
iii. Purgatorio
iv. Scherzo. Nicht zu schnell
v. Finale. Langsam, schwer
Mahler's Symphony No. 10 in F-sharp major was his final composition, written at a time of great turmoil in his life. At the time of his death, the composition was substantially complete, but not fully elaborated or orchestrated. Only the first movement is regarded as reasonably complete and performable as Mahler intended.
Christopher White has been a soloist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin since
August 2014, and Head of Music since 2017. He has worked as a pianist and conductor for the Glyndebourne, Bayreuth, and Salzburg Festivals, as well as English National and Frankfurt Operas. As a soloist, he has performed piano concerti by Beethoven, Brahms and Rachmaninov with the London Orchestra of the City as well as Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto in the Berlin Philharmonie. A recording of his arrangement of Mahler's Tenth Symphony is available on the Divine Arts label.
Arrangements in music are unique because they afford new insight into the original. Unlike in language, where a translation can render a work
unintelligible in the departure language, musical translations offer an
opportunity to hear the same materials with fresh and open ears.
