The Continental: Hollows by Alex Mullarky
‘Hollows’ is a remarkable new play written by a rising Cumbrian star, 20-year-old Alex Mullarky from Whitehaven.

In a remote ruined church in West Cumbria, four teenagers meet up to drink lager, mess about and talk about the future. Avery plans to be an artist, Laurie needs a job, Adam hopes to join the army and Chris just wants to fit in.

Then two things happen which change their world, something right there in the ruins and something 3,567 miles away.

The play powerfully and movingly discusses a very live issue for young people in towns and villages all over the north….’should I stay, or should I go?’

The Apprenticed Actors is Barrow-in-Furness’s acclaimed project that gives promising young actors experience of professional touring theatre and develops the work of talented young Cumbria writers.

This is the play’s second tour of the North West .

Below is a part of the Arts Council England’s Assessment of the piece when it played at Bolton Octagon in Spring 2011

‘The post show discussion revealed a high degree of engagement and showed that the play had resonated with them. Above all the young people could see what high standards of production and performance had been achieved and they wanted to know how they could be part of the scheme. This is praise indeed for a rural company making a real impact.’

Times and cost are to be arranged.

Directions

Road Directions

From the town centre, head straight down Fishergate Hill past the railway station and County Hall, then turn left onto South Meadow Lane. Follow South Meadow Lane until you reach the river, and the pub will be on the right. There's a generous car park behind the beer garden, which can be reached by turning right straight after the pub onto Riverside.

If you're coming from out of town, it's easy to get lost in Preston's one way system - we'd suggest finding your way onto Ringway, which curves round the north of the town centre forming part of the A6 and the A59. After that, head west and follow the signs to the railway station up Corporation Street - once you've reached the railway station, follow the directions above.

If you're coming from Penwortham or the west of Preston, drive along Broadgate from Fishergate Hill, onto Riverside, and then turn left onto Connaught Road. Drive straight along Connaught Road until you reach the end, then turn right onto South Meadow Lane. The pub is a couple of hundred yards along on the right.

Public Transport Directions

You can catch the Preston Bus or Stagecoach service number 3 down Fishergate, and get off at the junction of Fishergate Hill and Broadgate (just before the bridge over the river Ribble). From here, it's just a short walk down Broadgate and on to Riverside until you get the the pub, on the corner of Riverside and South Meadow Lane.

Both services also call at the bus stop on the opposite side of Fishergate Hill on the return journey to Preston, along with services to and from Leyland, Southport and other outlying areas.
