What if your first true love was someone you had been told to hate?
William Shakespeare shall be your guide for this beautiful and interactive retelling of his famous eternal love story: Romeo & Juliet. Travel back in time to Elizabethan England, and uncover the inspiration Shakespeare found within the walls of Hoghton Tower for his timeless tale of romance, hate and revenge which spiralled towards tragedy. Learn about the heartbreaking Lancastrian story of two religiously opposed families, two houses both alike in dignity. Meet Lady Dorothea Southworth of Samlesbury Hall and Richard de Hoghton whose overwhelming love would not keep them apart and risked everything to be together. Understand how their tragic tale may have inspired the Bard to compose his classic play and left a paranormal footprint upon Hoghton Tower.
'These violent delights have violent ends', Romeo & Juliet.
Age restrictions. The tour is not suitable for anyone under 12 years. All participants under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.
Comfort and access. The Tower will be extremely cold this time of year. Please ensure that you are wearing sufficiently warm, outdoor clothing and comfortable shoes, suitable for walking on uneven, historic surfaces. The starting point for the tour is accessed either via two flights of stone steps without a handrail or, alternatively, a single flight of narrower stones steps with a handrail. The tour itself involves a number of flights of stairs and different historic, sometimes, uneven and damp floor surfaces. The stairs include those into the underground passages and some are without handrails. For more information, please refer to the Facilities and Access page on the website.
The Tearoom will be closed.
