Northern Soul Talk - Soul by the sea
Showtown and Heritage Blackpool are thrilled to be hosting a talk on the Blackpool Mecca and the development of Northern Soul in Blackpool
"Soul by the Sea" is a free, online event, taking place on Thursday 7th October at 7.30pm.
Speakers Stephen Catterall and Keith Gildart will examine the emergence of the Blackpool Mecca in the context of Blackpool's changing role as Britain's premier seaside resort.
The talk will also explore the emergence of the Mecca's Highland Room as a leading centre for 'rare soul', later Northern Soul, music from the late 1960s.
It will also discuss the development of Northern Soul in Blackpool in the context of its place as a traditional working class seaside resort analysing the role that locality, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender played in the emerging Northern Soul scene and will consider the place that nostalgia has occupied since the Mecca's heyday.
