Step back in time and discover the art of textile creation through the ages in this hands-on historic weaving workshop. Explore the fascinating evolution of weaving techniques, from the warp-weighted looms of prehistory, to Viking peg weaving, and the intricate beauty of medieval tapestry weaving.
To begin, you will explore the wider mill to understand all the processes involved in post-industrial textile production, and introduce key terms and themes. As the workshop progresses, you will have the opportunity to consider how pre-industrial communities and societies created textiles, and what materials they used. Starting with an outdoor weaving activity, using all natural materials such as wood, plants and wool. After, you will learn about different historical methods of textile production and have the opportunity to try ancient weaving techniques, whilst gaining insight into the cultural and historical context of each method and you will investigate how we know about historic textiles, through archaeological and historical evidence.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, a craft lover, or simply curious, this immersive workshop offers a unique opportunity to develop a heritage crafting skill while connecting with the stories woven into our past. This workshop is suitable for beginners and those aged 16 years +.
