The Milky Way from Gisburn Forest. Photographer Robert Ince

A Bowland Dark Skies Festival event. (ONLINE)

The origins of a Municipal Astronomical Observatory in Preston came from the Preston Scientific Society, which founded in 1876 with an active astronomical section.

The Society convinced the Preston Corporation to fund a large astronomical instrument for public use with the opening of Deepdale Observatory in 1881. The observatory, which still houses the historic 8 inch Cooke Refractor, relocated to Moor Park in 1927 and was renamed the Jeremiah Horrocks Observatory.

Following his highly enjoyable talk last year, Graham McLoughlin of Preston and District Astronomical Society joins us once again - this time for a look at the history of what could be the oldest public observatory in the UK.

All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult to our online events.

Free, but booking essential. Please book via TryBooking at this link https://www.trybooking.co.uk/CAOD
