Broughton Players Mark 80 Years of Theatre with Lancashire Classic Hobson's Choice
Hobson's Choice 13th – 16th May 2026
Presented by Broughton Players at Preston Playhouse
Directed by Christine Odlum
The Broughton Players proudly celebrate their 80th anniversary with a vibrant production of the much‑loved Lancashire comedy Hobson's Choice, opening this May at Preston Playhouse.
Written in 1915 by Lancashire playwright Harold Brighouse, Hobson's Choice remains one of British theatre's most enduring comedies. Set in late 19th-century Salford, the play follows the domineering Henry Hobson, a bootmaker determined to control the lives of his three daughters. His plans are brilliantly unsettled by Maggie Hobson, the intelligent and fiercely independent eldest daughter, whose wit, determination, and quiet rebellion lead to unexpected and comic consequences.
Directed by Christine Odlum, this anniversary production celebrates both the humour and heart of Brighouse's writing. Rich in Lancashire dialect and sharp comic timing, the play captures universal themes of family, ambition, pride, and self‑belief—qualities that continue to resonate with modern audiences.
