Blackburn Classics 2021/22 - The Hallé at King George's Hall on Friday, 25th March 2022 at 7.30pm.
JIŘI ROŽEŇ CONDUCTOR
FRANCESCA DEGO VIOLIN
STENHAMMAR Excelsior! (14)
SIBELIUS Violin Concerto (35)
Interval
DVOŘÁK Symphony No.7 (35)
Celebrated for her sonorous tone, compelling interpretations and flawless technique, Francesca Dego performs the most popular and most recorded of twentieth-century violin concertos. From its mysterious opening to its achingly nostalgic slow movement, Sibelius’s finale was once described as ‘a polonaise for polar bears’!
A passionate advocate of Czech music, Jiři Rožeň’s interpretation of Dvořák’s distinctively Czech Seventh Symphony is not to be missed. Although it owes much to the influence of Brahms, its overall mood is turbulent and tragic, throwing into sharp relief the unrestrained exuberance of its ending: a rallying call to Dvořák’s compatriots in the face of Austro-Hungarian oppression.
The concert opens with a rarely performed Swedish gem. Written by a romantic and passionate 25-year-old, the melodies of Wilhelm Stenhammar’s symphonic overture Excelsior! are filled with ecstatic and upward-reaching energy.
