Family Friendly and Off Road Routes

The selection of routes offered below offer family friendly and off-road routes throughout Lancashire for cyclists of all ability. The rides available for download include mountain bike trails, canal rides and coastal routes.

The times given are approximate and will depend on your ability.


Cycling in the Forest of BowlandDunsop Bridge - Dunsop Valley
8km (1 hour)

A lovely family cycle route that starts in the charming little village of Dundop Village in the Ribble Valley and takes you out into the heart of the Forest of Bowland. Travel alongside the upper stretch of the river Dunsop with the fells on all sides of you.

Cycling in LancashirePadiham, Ightenhill, Burnley

The Padiham to Burnley Cycle Route via Ightenhill is an attractive cycle route along the scenic Calder Valley, which avoids busy main roads. Going past green fields andwoodland, it is mainly rural in nature.

Cycling in LancashireFoulridge-Barrowford-Victoria Park (Pendle)
10km (1.5 hours)

This route follows the canal towpath from Foulridge and is part of the Pennine Cycleway. You can also take a worthwhile detour to Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford.

Gisburn Forest CyclingGisburn Forest
9km (1 hour)

Gisburn Forest is the largest in Lancashire, climbing above the Ribble Valley with fantastic viewsof the Forest of Bowland. This family cycle route takes in plenty of widlife and fauna and Rathmell Horse Farm and Stocks Reservoir & Fishery are both nearby.

Leeds Liverpool CanalFoulridge-Greenberfield-East Marton (Pendle)
6km

A lovely route following the Leeds - Liverpool canal north towards the Yorkshire Dales and along the way you can stop and enjoy places like Salterforth Village and Greenderfield locks.

City, Coast & Countryside Circuit

Lancaster - Morecambe Promenade - Hest Bank - Lancaster

Recent improvements to the district's cycle network which include a new toucan crossing connecting Morecambe promenade to the new shared use path on Coastal Road, Morecambe and Lancaster Canal have opened up a new 11 mile off-road cycle route.
