Your Ultimate Check List

Planning a wedding can be a little daunting, with so much to think about, organise and implement we have created the ultimate checklist to help you with the most important details.

18 months to go First thing’s first is getting that guest list sorted. You can’t determine the budget nor venue without this vital information. If you’re struggling for who to invite (or who not to invite), check out page 20 for our handy flow chart to give you a better idea of who are the VIPs and the VI nos! It’s numbers time. This is when all that detailed (and boring) spreadsheet experience finally becomes useful. Breakdown your budget within a spreadsheet to be able to see the big picture and understand priorities. The booking of the venue is one of the most important decisions to be made on our checklist. Wedding venues often get booked up well in advance, so be sure to shop around early. Take everything into consideration – themes, location, seating and don’t forget to check if they have a Registrar free! Now is the time to appoint your wedding party. These will be the people who will help you on the day. From bridesmaids and best men, to ushers and ringbearers, choosing those who will be most helpful will ease your mind on the day.

16 months to go If you haven’t already, now is the time to create a Pinterest account. You can create boards to visualise how you want your day to look and feel. So, decide the theme which best represents you both as a couple and get pinning! Book your florist. Flowers are a statement piece on your big day. One of the key trends this year is to have more potted plants rather than fresh cut flowers, helping to reduce your carbon footprint. Although don’t be disheartened, you can still impress with flower arches and outstanding flower installations. Other key things to book at this point in the process are your photographer, wedding band or DJ and caterers if needed. Get ahead and order your cake too, although this can usually wait until 8-10 months before.

12 months to go

6 months to go

A key and often unknown part of the pre-wedding planning is registering your intention to marry. You will need to book an appointment with your registrar where you will register your intention to marry, pay for your marriage certificate and give details of your wedding ceremony. Of course you don’t have to have a registrar conduct the ceremony on the day, there are some fantastic Celebrants in Lancashire who can help you create your dream ceremony, entirely bespoke to you.

Send out wedding invitations. They’ve saved the date but now make sure all your guests know the finer details of the day. Venue, timings, dress code and local accommodation should all be included.

Send out your save the dates! What’s a wedding without your loving friends and family there? If you’ve used our handy ‘wedding guest’ flow chart, then this process just got easier. With the time you’ve saved, why don’t you try your creative flair and design/make the invites yourself. It can be a fun activity with your future partner. The second biggest decision (we believe) is your wedding outfit. It’s likely from an early age you’ve dreamt of the perfect dress or suit, whether it’s classic, glamourous or something completely unique – make sure you allow plenty of time for alterations.

Taste testing. Probably the most fun part of organising a wedding is to make sure that everything being served on the day is absolutely perfect. From the canapes to the main meal (and not forgetting the cake!), you need to be sure the food being served hits the spot. This is the time to start pulling all the little bits together. Wedding rings, accessories, bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits, thank you gifts, and hair and make up trials can all be done now. Lancashire is the perfect place to celebrate your upcoming wedding with your closest friends, on a stag or hen do. Whether you hire a quaint cottage, visit a luxury spa or play a round of golf, it’s the perfect place to let your hair down and begin the final countdown to the day.

One week to go!!! Hopefully all the major tasks will be done by now and you can start to really look forward to the big day. Dedicate this week to going over everything and maybe planning a lovely wedding day surprise, like a handwritten letter, for your other half.

The biggest wedding trends in 2021 and beyond have been revealed. Which one will you choose?

Bowland Food Hall

Local Menus

Keep things local this year when it comes to choosing your wedding breakfast menu. This up-andcoming trend has become more popular as weddings stay closer to home in amidst the pandemic, and not only that it is eco-friendly and helps support local businesses. In Lancashire you are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to delicious food that hasn’t travelled miles, from succulent meats, creamy cheeses and root vegetables to crunchy salads, freshly caught shrimp and the most delicious cast ales. Make sure to speak to your caterer about this delicious trend. #sayidoinlancs | sayidoinlancashire.com

Keep Traditional

After the last 18 months, it is no surprise that weddings are reverting to more traditional themes. Focusing on the sentimental moments of the day, rather than grand gestures, you’ll find timeless dresses, simple bouquets and formal speeches. Lancashire’s wide variety of venues across the county, mean that finding somewhere close to home with fond memories isn’t a difficult task. You’ll find classic English gardens full of roses, stunning stately homes and traditional Lancashire pubs. Hoghton Tower

Weekday Celebrations

Looking to keep the costs down or find availability sooner at your perfect venue? Weekday weddings are now becoming a much more popular choice. Simply moving your special day from a Saturday to a Monday can save thousands of pounds, as venues and suppliers offer weekday packages and with the overflow from 2020 weddings still in full swing, there is more likely to be availability.

Mark Tattersall - The Out Barn

You’ll often find Lancashire venues with midweek offers, and recommended suppliers who offer the same. To see if your venue you has an offer on currently you can go to visitlancashire.com/ say-i-do-in-lancashire and you’ll find all the wedding offers in one place.

Make it small

Limitations and lockdowns have led many to many couples to reflect on what is truly important when it comes to weddings, including who they want to celebrate their day with. Micro weddings with less than 20 guests will continue to be popular even once restrictions are limited and offer the chance for weddings to be a lot more personal and emotional. Small and intimate venues are scattered throughout Lancashire perfect for these smaller affairs, as well as larger venues who can help create the feeling of intimacy with outside ceremonies, or beautifully decorated tipis or gazebos. #sayidoinlancs | sayidoinlancashire.com

Top things to consider before booking your

wedding venue Choosing a wedding venue is often one of the most important parts of the wedding planning process. It helps to shape the rest of the day, from the flowers, colours, and photography, to the all important wedding party attire. The right choice can help the day come together with ease. Here are some top tips to consider when booking your wedding venue.

Think about the type of venue that reflects you

Are you the type of couple to go on country walks, spend time in the city or explore historic buildings? Across Lancashire you will find a wide range of venues to suit, from castles and stately homes to boutique hotels, cotton mills and country pubs, all waiting to help make your day extra special.

Make and stick to a budget

Your wedding day shouldn’t break the bank, and there really are venues available for all budgets in Lancashire. Small budgets don’t have to mean you lose out on a spectacular venue either, with wedding ceremonies at venues such as Haworth Art Gallery costing as little as £350.

Location, Location, Location

Lancashire’s central location makes it a wonderful place for a wedding, but there are other things to consider when picking your venue’s location. This can be things like, how will your guests get there? Is there accommodation nearby? If the ceremony is in a different location, is it easy to get to?

The Tipis at Riley Green

Lancaster Brewery

Can you all fit?

Canal Boat Cruises

Try to have an idea of the number of guests you would like at the ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening event as these will help narrow down suitable venues. You may want more guests to join you in the evening, can the venue accommodate this?

Samlesbury Hall

See a range of venues

Often you’ll have an idea of what type of venue you would like, however it is always good to throw in a few wild cards, as you never know, that independent picture house, converted barn or countryside hotel might actually be your perfect venue.

Non-negotiables

If you have an idea of how you want your day to go, write a list of non-negotiables. If you want a confetti shot, to cater your own day or include a beloved family dog in your ceremony, make sure that the venue can do this before you decide to commit.

When you know, you know

Like how you felt when you realised your partner was the one, you will likely get a similar feeling about your perfect venue. Go with your gut, if it feels right, it probably is.

Seasonal Wedding Theme

Picking the perfect time of the year to get married can be difficult. If you’re aiming for an autumn or winter wedding, it’s definitely a good idea to embrace the season. Worrying about rain or the cold won’t make it go away, so bring the best part of the seasons indoors. Creating a warming winter wonderland or an auburn autumn setting, is unique and memorable. If you prefer to embrace the summer and spring weather with an outdoor wedding, albeit risky, the setting speaks for itself. With big blooms and bright skies, an al fresco ceremony enhances the beauty of your special day. Giving you that extra space for guests to spread out and be comfortable, and more fresh air for you to breathe in before you walk down the aisle!

The Dress

Top tips for finding

This is a moment you have likely dreamed about for a long time, and whilst very exciting it can also be a little daunting, with so much choice and pressure to find the perfect dress. Sugared Almonds Bridal Emporium have been established for over 28 years and know a thing or two about wedding dresses. Here are their top tips on finding ‘The One’; 1. Start searching for your dream wedding dress at least 12 months before your wedding, if you have the luxury. This gives you time to research, visit stores or designers. Did you know it can take up to 6 months for a wedding dress to be made? 2. When setting your budget for your wedding gown it can be easy to forget all the additional details. Make sure you consider the alteration cost and those all-important wedding accessories, such as a veil. 3. Make sure before visiting any stores you do a little research on wedding gowns, try to find which styles, colours and fabrics you like, making it easier when you are faced with hundreds of gowns in person. Pinterest is a great place to start. 4. When you do start trying on wedding dresses consider your venue and theme. Imagine yourself on your wedding day in your dress, how you want to feel and does the dress fit the wedding style that you desire?

Top tips for the perfect

Make-up

Whether you consider it an essential cost or an indulgent treat – how your makeup looks can make or break how you feel on your big day. Makeup Doctor, a leading make up coach, gives their top tips for picture perfect makeup; 1. Choosing the style of your make up for the day is a completely personal decision. Spend time trawling the internet for inspiration, Pinterest and Instagram are brilliant places to start. 2. Book make up coaching sessions, where you will learn what colours are best for you, how to apply the make up and any tips and tricks to look your best. 3. You may need to wear a touch more make up than you usually do for your special day, for photos and for it to last, but you should still always feel comfortable in the amount of makeup you are wearing.

4. When it comes to trying anything new, whether products, facials, tans, ensure you try them months before the big day so you know it will be suitable for your skin. Sometimes new products can react or behave differently to what you would expect or affect makeup application. 5. Remember that above all else, the most beautiful people, are happy ones!

Mark Tattersall - The Out Barn

Pictures say a thousand words

There is nothing better than reminiscing with your loved one over the photos that captured the essence and feelings from one of the best days of your life. Often a treasured sentimental momentum for generations to come, your chosen photographer has high expectations to live up too. Therefore, choosing the best one for you and your beloved will be as personal as choosing your wedding rings. Here are some top tips from Mark Tattersall on how to choose your wedding photographer; 1. Find the right photographer for you! An award winner or the photographer your friend used may be a great photographer, but they also need to be a good fit with your personalities, sense of humour and style of wedding.

3. Don’t practice posing, practice getting lost in the moment. Wrap your arms around each other and forget everything else... your pictures will be beautiful natural moments. 4. Tell your photographer what type of pictures you love but avoid telling them what pictures to take. You have chosen someone who’s work you love, now trust them to do their thing. Every wedding is different, and photographers thrive with the freedom to get creative. 5. Nominate a bridesmaid or friend to keep an eye on your hair and make-up and carry spare hair pins and lipstick, especially just before your couple portraits. Most photographers will tell you if you need a lippy top up but it’s good to have someone on hand to help.

Top tips for finding

The Cake

Preferred supplier of Thornton Hall

From cupcakes, to cheese wheels, chocolate ganache to a traditional fruit cake, choosing which flavour might not be the only decision to make when selecting your wedding cake. Sugar Fancies, Colne, give their top tips to help make the process easier; 1. With cakes, as with all suppliers, if you have seen a cake designer and you love their work, get in touch as early as possible. You don’t need to have the design finalised straight away as this can be done when you’ve made more decisions around the look of your wedding. Often cake designers work alone and therefore only take on a couple of wedding cakes per week so can get booked up quite quickly. 2. Whether you’re paying a professional to make your wedding cake or a friend has offered, always think about the presentation. The cake should be fully incorporated into your day, don’t stick it in a dark corner! This is especially important if you’ve paid someone to create your dream cake. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, think about the stand you might use or adding some flavour cards along with some foliage or flowers to tie in with your bouquet. 3. Think about how much you’d like to spend on your cake. The overall cost must include any delivery and set up charge along with the cost for a consultation or samples. If you’re thinking of having fresh flowers added to the cake, your wedding florist would usually supply these to the cake designer and would be an additional cost to factor in. When you contact wedding cake designers do explain your budget from the start. They can most likely make suggestions as to the finish of the cake if they understand how much you would like to spend. #sayidoinlancs | sayidoinlancashire.com

53

4. Following on from budget DON’T choose a cake designer purely on price! Look closely at different designs and think about if you would be happy with them compared to another designer charging only slightly more. If you discuss your budget with your cake designer, they may be able to suggest options to reduce the overall cost of the cake order without compromising on the finish. If you have a large number of guests, you could have fewer tiers for the main cake with an extra cutting cake for additional portions. This is more cost effective as a cutting cake would be simply iced and served along with the main cake. 5. Do choose the design and flavours that you as a couple like! It’s your wedding day and it should represent you as a couple. If you really love a wacky flavour discuss it with your cake designer and see how it could be incorporated into your day. Don’t be scared to show your personality through your cake design. It’s great to make a statement. And although a four-tier cake might look imposing in your own kitchen when it’s sat in a large room at your venue it’s a great focal point.

How to:

stay calm & enjoy your wedding

Although your wedding day will likely be the happiest day of your life, it can also be one of the most stressful. With people coming and going, lots of things to think about, timings to stick to and the thought of getting your lines right in front of your family and friends! Do not fret, here are some helpful ways to relieve some of that stress and make sure you enjoy every moment;

Mitton Hall by David Scholes

1. Pull together a timeline for the morning

A rough guide to when you and your wedding party are getting make-up and hair done, when the photographer is arriving, and what time you need to get into your dress to be ready to do any final details all help on the day. Our tip – if you have time, get the wedding party’s hair and makeup done first so they can be free to run about with any last minute tasks.

Applestore Cafe

2. Lay out your outfit the night before

Make sure you collate everything together in one area, including shoes and accessories. Not only will this help in the morning rush, but it may be useful if anyone, such as the photographer, needs access to them.

3. Make sure you have an early night With all the last minute preparations and excitement it is very easy to want to stay up and re-check everything or spend extra time with loved ones before the day, but your wedding day is a long day and those few extra hours will help carry you through.

The Wellbeing Farm

4. Eat Breakfast

It might sound simple, but once the nerves and excitement settle in this is likely the last thing you will feel like doing. Try to have something filling, like cereal and fruit, but if all else fails a couple of pieces of toast is better than nothing!

Holmes Mill by On Love and Photography

5. Do something that calms you

This may be listening to some of your favourite songs, laughing with friends, meditation or sipping a glass of fizz. Whatever it is make sure you have what you need to hand and if you need anything else this is what the wedding party are for.

6. During the ceremony take a deep breath

Bashall Barn

Accrington Town Hall - Lord Photography

Once the wedding starts everything can move very quickly, when you are stood together make sure you take a pause to take it all in. Look around the room, at your friends and family and most importantly that incredibly special person you are marrying.

7. Food to go

We may sound like a broken record, but you will need to eat, however taking time to enjoy the full wedding breakfast in between guests coming to see you or pulling you away can be difficult. Try to carve at least five minutes with your other half, but if all else fails ask the venue to pack it up for later.

8. Let your hair down

Once the speeches and formalities are over don’t forget to have fun! Grab your new spouse and hit the dance floor, chat with friends and family and fully enjoy this celebration of your love.
