Pioneering playwright John Godber OBE brings his original cult comedy Bouncers back with a bang in an acclaimed new production at Blackpool Grand Theare from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 February.

Get your glad rags on and get ready for the night out of your life! The Bouncers are back in town. Originally premiering at the Edinburgh Festival in 1977, John Godber’s highly revered and critically acclaimed Bouncers is still one of the most performed plays in the UK and is named as one of The National Theatre’s ‘Plays of the Century’.

Often imitated but never beaten, the original Bouncers is eye-wateringly funny, coarsely celebratory, and as bitingly relevant today as it ever was. With a pumping 80s soundtrack, this new production takes us back to the glorious highs when disco was king, and everyone lived for the weekend. Like a hideously funny Saturday Night Fever, Bouncers is more a social phenomenon than a play.

Hilarious, vulgar, frenetic and highly physical, Bouncers has also become an international sensation, gathering awards from around the world. Join Les, Ralph, Judd and Lucky Eric as they relive an unforgettable night in a Yorkshire disco in the 80s. Everyone will be there: the DJ, the girls, the boys and the fish and chip van…

John Godber OBE has the distinction of being one of the most performed writers in the English language and his prolific catalogue of work includes the darkly funny smash-hit Bouncers along with Up ‘n’ Under, Teechers, Lucky Sods, Seasons in the Sun, Screaming Blue Murder, Do I Love You? and Perfect Pitch to name just a few. But what else do you know about the famous playwright?

Here's five things you may not know about John Godber OBE:

1. John has won numerous awards for his often gritty and always humorous plays, including a Laurence Olivier Award, two BAFTAs and seven Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards.

2. John was Artistic Director of Hull Truck Theatre Company for 26 years, taking it from bankruptcy in 1984 to its new home in a £15 million theatre in 2010. He then established The John Godber Company in 2011 with the purpose of allowing himself to continue expressing himself through the dramatic form and with the belief of putting the artist at the centre of the theatrical creative process.

3. He was born on 18 May 1956 in Upton, West Yorkshire, the son of a miner and an English dramatist.

4. After qualifying as a teacher, Godber remained in West Yorkshire and went on to become Head of Drama at Minsthorpe High School. John was subsequently appointed Professor of Drama at the University of Hull.

5. He has hundreds of writing credits for television and the theatre, including Brookside, Grange Hill, Chalkface, Crown Court and Bloomin’ Marvellous.
