Elephants have an unforgettable birthday celebration

BLACKPOOL ZOO'S longest standing residents, Kate and Crumple, will be celebrating their 39th birthdays and everyone is invited to the party!

Kate and Crumple, both Asian elephants, have been at the zoo since it first opened in 1972 and are two of the zoo's most recognisable and best loved animals.

Their special birthday celebration takes place on Saturday 19th July from 6.30pm to 9.00pm.

Kate and Crumple will be presented with a special, jumbo-sized birthday cake made of fresh fruit and vegetables,

Visitors can watch elephant bath time, take part in various competitions and see an exhibition by world-famous wildlife artist, Anthony Wyatt. There will also be the chance to adopt an elephant and purchase a painting by one of the elephants!

All proceeds from the evening will go to support the Biodiversity and Elephant Conservation Trust, protecting engendered Asian elephants in Sri Lanka.

Elephant facts

- Blackpool Zoo has four Asian elephants.
- Crumple and Kate came from an elephant orphanage in Asia where they were both abandoned as babies.
- Elephants, Indra and Marcella both belonged to a German circus that closed down. They would have been put down had they not been rescued and given a safe home at Blackpool Zoo.
- The zoo's heaviest female elephant is Indra, who weighs approx four tonnes.
- Elelphants can live for 60 years.
- Elephants can only lie down for about two to three hours because of their great weight.
- Each elephant at Blackpool Zoo eats two bales of hay each day and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
