Lancaster Cathedral celebrates 150 years

7th September 2009

Discover the history of Lancaster Cathedral at a special exhibition at Lancaster City Museum to commemorate its 150th year as a place of worship.

From Saturday 12 September, Lancaster City Museum will join Lancaster Cathedral to bring you this exhibition looking at the history of catholicism in the area, the building of the church, its cathedral status, and the lives of the people which have helped shape the Lancaster we know today.

St Peter's Church was consecrated on 4 October 1859, as the new catholic parish church for Lancaster. In 1924 it became the cathedral church of the new Diocese of Lancaster and has now served the parish, city and diocese for 150 years. The building is a fine example of neo-Gothic architecture, designed by local architect E.G. Payley.

As well as learning about this fabulous building, the exhibition will also contain many treasures from the cathedral and a wonderful array of colourful Mitres and Vestments on display.

Also in September, take part in a 'Behind the Scenes' tour of the cathedral on Saturday, 12, or visit the newly restored cathedral organ and take part in the 'Heritage Tea Party' on Saturday, 26 September.

Whilst the exhibition is running, the Whiteside Chapel in the cathedral will be set up for Mass as it would have been celebrated in the Victorian period, with smaller displays about the building, its clergy and parish life also on show.

The museum will be providing a range of free talks on Lancaster Cathedral at 1pm on 28th September, 26th October and 23rd November.

Younger visitors can also enjoy listening to the chamber organ and decorating their own candle on the weekend of the 26th September and there will be family craft activities held during October half term.

The exhibition will run until Saturday, 21 November.

Lancaster City Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free.
