Home / Guide to Lancashire and Blackpool / Exploring Rossendale
The shortest street in the world, the longest dry ski slope in the North West, the last 'temperance bar' in England. Where can you find them all?
The Rossendale Valley, that's where. And Rossendale has even more variety to give something for everyone to enjoy. That's why we say 'Rossendale's Alive'.
Adrenalin action. Ski Rossendale is the longest dry-slope snowboarding and skiing centre in the North West, with spectacular views from its natural hillside setting. Mountain biking & horse riding are catered for by the Pennine Bridleway National Trail which runs through the borough, and windsurfing & waterskiing (with special waterski facilities for disabled people) take place on reservoirs set high in the hills.
Local life and colour. The world-famous Britannia Coconut Dancers perform their 12-mile dance every Easter Saturday, dressed in clogs, breeches, flowered hats and skirts! Festivals, Christmas Markets, exhibitions & nightlife are all part of Rossendale life. Rawtenstall draws visitors for specialist shopping, especially designer fashion &contemporary homewares.
Interactive action. Hands-on museums, such as nationally-important Helmshore Mills Museum and Rawtenstall's 18th Century Weavers' Cottage describe the textile industry. And you can still buy shoes at the local footwear museum. The award-winning East Lancashire Steam Railway offers 'drive a steam train' experiences as well as 'Days Out With Thomas' and regular trips along the beautiful Irwell River Valley. 'Valley of Stone' guided walks, every Sunday, will show you Rossendale's varied scenery in knowledgeable and friendly company.
Value for money. With mill shops for textiles, fashion, footwear, & furniture, plus three traditional Lancashire markets & a monthly Farmers' Market Rossendale shopping offers great value. There's also quality accommodation of good value & restaurants for all tastes.
Exciting environment. Rossendale's stunning South Pennine scenery is a treat in itself and includes surprises such as giant sculptures hiding in the countryside, the Pennine Bridleway National Trail & the Rossendale Way 47-mile footpath.
