Wheelton
Divided into two parts - Higher Wheelton and (lower) Wheelton, this area can be found on the main road from Chorley to Blackburn.
Wheelton has tiny sloping streets, giving an accurate impression of the surrounding hilly countryside, with Briers Brow being the steepest.
Part of the village borders the Leeds Liverpool Canal. The Top Lock is nearby and the locks themselves are a fascinating reminder of the canal linkage once vital to trans-Pennine industrial canal traffic in their difficult descent from the higher reaches of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal to the lower regions of West Lancashire.
This spot is a hive of activity during the summer months as the tourists narrowboats ply their way along this pleasant stretch of the canal. Many an hour can be spent outside the local hostelry watching these boats navigate the locks
