The lively university city of Preston is a modern metropolis with vibrant nightlife, excellent shopping and a wide choice of museums. It is also a historic place; like many medieval English settlements, it was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. You can discover nearly 1,000 years of history on a guided Heritage Walk around Preston with the knowledgeable Blue Badge Guides. On it you’ll of pass some of the city’s hundreds of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings. Preston’s been voted in the top ten of shopping cities outside London! Shop till you drop in its two indoor shopping malls, The Mall St Georges and Fishergate, along main streets Fishergate and Friargate or enjoy ‘the best market in Lancashire’ - Preston Market. Preston is a surprisingly green city, with a profusion of leafy parks, canal side strolls and river walks to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Have a zen moment in the Japanese Rock Garden in Avenham Park, designed by Edward Milner during the 1860s. You can also enjoy a stroll along the River Ribble while you’re here. If it’s countryside you’re looking for, Preston has it in truckloads. The city is crisscrossed with more than 160 miles of public footpaths and bridleways. Discover Beacon Fell, a country park with a mix of woodland, moorland and farmland.
