Don't miss:
At 557 metres, Pendle Hill dominates the surrounding Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, providing spectacular views that stretch all the way to the coast on a clear day. This inspirational mound has a long and dramatic history, which dates all the way back to the Bronze Age – an ancient burial site was discovered at the summit of Pendle Hill. However, it is the sensational events that took place during the 17th century for which it is best known.* Discover the Pendle Witches Trail, a fascinating walking tour which takes you around some of the places that are synonymous with the infamous Pendle Witches. It starts in the quaint hamlet of Barley and takes in the picturesque villages of Newchurch and Roughlee, both recent winners of Lancashire Village of the Year awards. Don’t miss Witches Galore souvenir shop and café in Newchurch, or St Mary’s churchyard, supposedly the site of the Witches Graves. You can also follow a similar Witches Trail by car or bike. On a cheerier note, Pendle Hill is also an inspirational spot, where in 1652 George Fox had a vision and subsequently founded the Quaker movement, which exists to this day.
Join other daring folk who walk to the summit of Pendle Hill on Hallowe’en. The hill is supposedly haunted, as evidenced by a live investigation by Living Channel’s Most Haunted Show a few years ago! Visit the British in India Museum in nearby Nelson where a collection of coins, photographs and uniforms detail Britain’s colonial rule in India.
There are various walking and cycling tours which are perfect to discover the natural beauty of Pendle Hill and its surrounds, they include the Pendle Three Peaks Trails, the Grand Cycle Tour of Pendle and the 45-mile, circular Pendle Way. Discover a world of witchy paraphernalia at Witches Galore in Newchurch, find out more about the witches’ history at Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford, and pay a visit to artist Keith Melling’s Studio in the quaint village of Fence where you can buy a landscape of the area to remind you of your holiday!
