The cheery seaside towns of Thornton and Cleveleys in Wyre share an interesting and varied history, with Thornton being mentioned in the Doomsday Book, while Cleveleys mostly dates back to the 19th century when a Mr Cleveleys built a hotel here to accommodate the growing numbers of tourists flocking to the pretty region. Visitors continue to enjoy this coastal retreat which is situated just four miles north of the bright lights of Blackpool, especially since the award-winning £20 million renovation of Cleveleys’ Seafront. A kilometre of the water’s edge has been completely transformed and you can stroll along the stylish new promenade admiring the new collection of contemporary artworks, iconic architecture, innovative lighting that’s triggered by the tide and a striking pavilion. There are several new eateries and a state-of-the-art cinema showing the latest blockbusters. Popular Jubilee Gardens boasts a children's play area, grassland areas, a multi-use games area and skate park for youngsters to enjoy. For a complete contrast, take the historic tram along the seafront to Blackpool. Of course, Thornton Cleveleys is still famous for its miles of beaches which not only attract myriad species of migrating birds, they’re also perfect for kite flying and sandcastle building – ensuring its appeal to all ages.
