The market town of Burnley sits snugly in a valley at the confluence of the Calder and Brun Rivers, surrounded by rugged South Pennine countryside. Discover picturesque moorlands, woodlands, waterways and stone farms as you walk, ride or cycle the 40-mile Burnley Way. Alternatively, head to dramatic Cliviger Gorge, carved into the landscape by glacial meltwaters at the end of the last ice-age. Take your binoculars to spot wildlife that includes peregrine falcon, raven and deer. Discover Burnley’s cloth-making past at Queen Street Mill Textile Museum, the only remaining steam powered weaving mill in the world. Then see how the workers lived at the preserved Victorian Weaver’s Triangle. Bargain hunters will be in seventh heaven in Burnley. Burnley Market has been going for more than 700 years and its 200-odd stalls sell everything from food and clothes to flowers and crafts. Or head to one of the mill shops from 30,000sq ft Barden Mill on the banks of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal to Sherry’s Lancashire Mill Shop which is great for bed linens, towels and curtains.

What's On in Burnley

At the Burnley Show and Hot Air Balloon Extravaganza in July gaze in awe as a series of hot air balloons take to the skies or stay till darkness falls to watch the special ‘Night Glow’ where rows of balloons light up in a choreographed musical display. More than 5,000 people gather to see vintage and classic cars and go to the fun fair at the annual Classic Car Show in Towneley Park. Blues fans should head to the 21st Burnley National Blues Festival at Easter 2009, where artists from both sides of the Atlantic will perform.

Must See and Do in Burnley

Visit 15th century Towneley Hall, set in 247 acres of pretty parkland dotted with woodland walks, a children’s play area and a sculpture trail. The Hall itself has a museum and art gallery. Or stop by Gawthorpe Hall on the banks of the River Calder to see the renowned Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth collections of lace, textiles and embroidery. Walk to the top of Crown Point to discover Burnley’s 21st century panopticon, the Singing Ringing Tree, a unique sculpture that ‘sings’ as wind whistles through its steel pipes.
