Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Carnforth

The Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Carnforth, first designated in 1972, spans the county boundary between Lancashire and Cumbria and covers an area of approximately 75sq kms. A distinctive landcape on the shores of Morecambe Bay, the Arnside & Silverdale AONB reveals an intimate mosaic of limestone hills, ancient woodland, herby-rich grassland and coastal scenery. Rich in wildlife, with a plethora of birdlife and specimens of over half the nation's flowering plants can be found here, spring especially, is a great time to visit. Look out for the cowslips and early purple orchids, listen to the bittern booming at the RSPB Leighton Moss Reserve and be captivated by the many species of butterfly fluttering in the meadows. Watch the spectacular tidal bore as it races up the Kent Estuary against a backdrop of the Lakeland Fells and discover the medieval tower houses and limekilns which are reminders of days gone by. Take advantage of the excellent public transport network to reach this AONB, then soak up the peace and tranquility of this special place as you walk along secluded footpaths or cycle through this superb countryside, stopping off along the way for a drink at the many pubs.
