The historic market town of Poulton-le-Fylde, in Wyre, is a charming place full of cobbled streets, unusual shops and ancient sights. With plenty of self catering accommodation and camping & caravan site, Poulton-le-Fylde has everything to suit all tastes and budgets. Tour the village and its scenic surrounds on the three-mile long Poulton-le-Fylde Historic Trail, which sets off from River Wyre Hotel, a 19th century pub close to Skippool Creek, where smuggling was once rife. From here you wander past salad-growing fields and quaint cottages until you get to St Chad’s Church. The earliest records of this church date back to 1094, although the tower dates from the 1630s and the main body of the church was built in 1752. In springtime the churchyard becomes a riot of colour thanks to carpets of purple, yellow and white crocuses. Traditionally agriculture was the main industry in the countryside surrounding Poulton-le-Fylde and records show that a market has been held in Market Square since at least 1348. This tradition continues to this day, with a Farmers Market held every fourth Saturday. Up until the 19th century there were wooden stocks in the square. Here wrong doers were locked in and had rotten food and eggs thrown at them. The original stocks are still there but luckily no-one gets locked up there any more!
There’s something fun to try all year long at Thingamajigz, an indoor children’s play centre for 0-11s. It’s jam-packed with slides, ball pits and tunnels making it perfect for rainy days. The Poulton Festival takes place every year at the beginning of June. A colourful procession through the streets ends at Cottam Hall Playing Fields where there’s a lively Fun Fair.
Poulton-le-Fylde is a farming community and unsurprisingly, residents put great emphasis on quality local produce. Buy your own goods for a picnic at the Farmers Market on the fourth Saturday of the month or enjoy Taste Lancashire Assured dining at several local restaurants: Shard Riverside Inn, Leaping Fish, Tolley’s Ryecroft Hall or Willow Tea Rooms. Families will love Singleton Maize Maze, a 12-acre maze that completely changes design every year to confuse those who dare to try it! There are also countless other indoor and outdoor activities.
