Warton

The tranquil village of Warton is located in the Lancaster district, just 1.5 miles away from Carnforth. This historical village is located within close proximity to Morecambe Bay, the Kendal canal, and the famous Carnforth Railway Station.

Carnforth has close connections to the first US president – George Washington. In the mid-13th Century, a branch of the Washington family from County Durham came to live in the Warton area. The tower of the village church was built by Robert and Lawrence Washington in the 15th Century. The Washington family’s Coat of Arms, now located inside the church tower, is said to have inspired the design of the flag of the United States of America.

It is believed that the church in this parish was established well before the Norman conquest in 1066. The oldest portion of the church is the south wall which is of 14th century origin.

On the 4th of July, Independence Day, each year, the 'Stars and Stripes' flag is flown. The flag was donated to the village after US soldiers had visited during WW2. Also located in the village is the George Washington Pub, which offers great local food and accommodation.

Located just West of Warton is Warton Crag, a nature reserve home to stunning habitats that have seen the reserve become part of a network of nationally important wildlife conservation sites. Until the 18th Century, Warton was a minor provider of limestone quarried from Warton Crag.
