Set amidst the outstanding natural beauty of the Forest of Bowland, is a picturesque country inn at the heart of the tiny village of Bashall Eaves which while offering luxury B&B is fast establishing a fine reputation for the quality of its steak restaurant.
With an elegantly rural interior, The Red Pump Inn was recently restored to its former glory by Frances & Jonathan Gledhill. New life and character has been injected by the bucket load, thanks to heritage colours, flag floors, oak beams, crackling open fires and warming wood burners.
This luxury B&B now combines the charm and character of a traditional inn yet with a casual elegance thanks to the Fran's design which extends through to the 8 boutique style bedrooms complete with French antique beds, “fluffy slipper” comfort mattresses and powerful wet room showers.
“We own, run and live in the inn ourselves” explains Fran, originally from County Kildare in Ireland, “and care passionately about providing a genuine, warm heartfelt welcome into our home for guests. We are motivated by the love for what we do and the quality of the product we provide”.
This approach is borne out by Jonathan, who in an earlier life ran a steak restaurant in Scarborough. His passion for steak led him to seek out Ginger Pig, a specialist meat supplier with farms in North Yorkshire and butchers shops in London, respected by butchers and beef farmers alike and winner of multiple awards for the quality of its meats.
“We are honoured to be the only restaurants outside London to receive 'Ginger Pig' steak and we are proud to be able to offer meat of such high eating quality” says Jonathan. He goes on to explain that the eight different steak cuts on the menu are sourced only from grass fed, slow maturing Longhorn, Shorthorn and Galloway cattle, dry aged to a minimum of 35 days and chargrilled to each customer’s preference producing a wonderful combination of flavour and tenderness.
Influenced by their love of provincial cuisine Fran and Jonathan's ethos is fabulous but simple food, uncomplicated while incredibly tasty. Along with the steaks there are a variety of chicken, lamb and fish cuts and a variety of simple classics from a bowl of Fran's Irish Stew to a fish chowder with specials listed daily. To achieve this they, along with local top chef Thomas Drinkall, carefully prepare and thoroughly taste test all recipes and source ingredients from suppliers with whom they establish a close relationship both within Clitheroe town and farther afield throughout Lancashire.
With origins dating back to 1756 the inn enjoys stunning views across the Ribble Valley to the legendary Pendle Hill and Longridge Fell as it sits on the historic Clitheroe to Lancaster route just 2 miles north of Clitheroe and along which, according to records, the famous Pendle witches were carried to trial in Lancaster. A perfect destination for locals popping in for a bite to eat, walkers, overnight guests enjoying a short break and for visiting corporate clients from Clitheroe, Blackburn and Burnley
Recommended by Sawday's Secret Places and the Good Pub Guide, it’s the perfect place for a night away in the heart of the Lancashire countryside.
